The seminar will feature a keynote presentation by eminent scholar and educator Habib Umar bin Hafiz from the Dar al Mustafa College in Tarim, Yemen on “The Mosque of the Prophet: Lessons for Our Times”. What kind of Mosques do British Muslims need in the 21st century? How can the institution of the mosque be made more relevant to the needs of communities where young people and women are playing an ever increasing and more critical role? What is the relationship between the mosque and her neighbours? What can we learn from our past? The aim of the seminar is to engender a robust discussion on the future of the mosque in Britain. In addition to Habib Umar, we look forward to welcoming Imam Ghulam Rasool (Charities Commission) who will speak about “The State of Britain’s Mosques” and Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (Cambridge University/Muslim Academic Trust) (TBC) who will reflect on a developing a vision for the development of the next generation of mosques. The seminar is aimed at imams and scholars from across West London; scholars-in-training; members of mosque committees; Muslim chaplains working in prisons, hospitals and universities; community activists; youth leaders; frontline workers and council staff working with Muslim communities. The seminar is an incredible opportunity to dialogue and engage with one of leading scholars in the Muslim world. It is responsible for co-ordinating and managing the work programme of scrutiny, identifying areas of need or issues of concern and ensuring that there is effective and timely scrutiny of Council policy, budget and authority-wide performance. Its role also includes holding the Executive to account. The Overview and Scrutiny Committee may delegate some of its function to one of the other standing panels and appoints a Chair for each panel from amongst its membership.
